Past Tense: Saturday, 6 April 2002

Travel Notes, Saturday 6th April 2002

The train from DC to Boston makes a lot of stops!

Jacob is upset. He points out that my items that I've put into the mesh bag on the back of the seat in front of me, are likely to get left behind. I consider, then tell him it's my habit on planes to store items there, and check that pocket before leaving. He says I left something I wanted in the plane, on two previous trips. I say I want the items in front of me, and that for me the risk is worth it. He is quite irritated and says I'm behaving willfully. I say it's not "willful" it's a considered decision that differs from his. We have unpleasant back and forths. Sigh.

All vacation, it seems that I'm tweaking his last nerve. The hotel clerk he kept asking, "What time zone are we in?" and she was shrugging helplessly, and he used increasingly stern voice to repeat the question, and I said gently, "She doesn't know, honey." And boy did I get it. "You're trying to control my communications! You screwed me up!" etc., all criticisms far, far deeper not just "I didn't like that." Hostile. I can see he was annoyed and why, but the terrible personal implications! Sigh.

Negativity. Hostility. Sweeping character condemnations.
"Willful" is his new word for me for ~ 3 days now.
